India is my Country...

All of you who are currently reading this post, might be very much into the happenings in the Financial Capital of India over the last few months as well as happenings in some of the states. Last few months I have made me rethink on lot of issues and perspectives and I thought why not write a post on them. And so here I have collated my thoughts over that last 3 days and trying to put them into logical sentences.

The media - print and visual has been agog with news about how one regional political leader in his bid to gain popularity is stoking fires of regionalism and sons of the soil issues and damaging the basic ethos of our pledge in school - "I am an Indian, India is my country; All Indians are my brothers and sisters ......... " I dont know if they take that pledge in school these days and if they do, does it have any importance at all. How can one gentleman say that if one has to stay in a particular state, he/she has to learn and live by that language, job preference is to be given to the localites and local customs are paramount. That is what rankles my conscience, my thoughts. Are we living in a dictatorship / Autocracy? What happened to India's plurality? The last few months has seen mindless violence and brutality towards the poor north Indian migrants (taxi drivers, roadside snacksellers and rickshaw drivers). One needs to look at this issue in the right perspective. Why and how did members of a particular community occupy certain professions (at the bottom of the social pyramid) in such a widespread manner. What were the local leaders and their cronies doing all this while? It would not be difficult to see it from the concepts of demand and supply and a vibrant democracy.

I have also observed a strange analogy between Bengal and Maharashtra. In Bengal, one would find the migrant labourers as Taxi Drivers, manual rickshaw pullers, civil construction labourers and porters at the railway station. Maharashtrians as with most Bengalis, like to earn their two pence, live a peaceful life, enjoy their fish curry & rice, and indulge in cultural pursuits (read theatre, music and art). Both the communities (the city dwellers) are not much attuned to hard manual labour. And probably thats where the so called "migrant" workforce filled up the gap. One would however need to consult a historian and anthropologist to find out the real reason.

Its important that the common educated man realises that we are being stupid by being conned and its not the leaders. They are a smart bunch of people who knows that we have stopped thinking collectively, ethically and straight. The Marxists in Bengal stopped the teaching of English Language in school till Standard 6. The common refrain was again "cultural degradation". But surprisingly, the children of these leadres were all going to reputed convents across Kolkata (erstwhile Calcutta). I was agahst at seeing the Govt textbooks of Standard 6 teaching the student the basic alphabets of English(see google u will find it). That was the mid 1980s. Cut across to 2008. Another state, another leader has raised the issue of regional identity. The children of such regional leaders though vouch by the international schools with astronomical fees. Some of them are also high profile real estate business men. A pertinent question that one should look into is how many of these real estate tycoons have actually contributed to something as socially relevant as "affordable housing" or any other socially relevant issues? Our infrastructure is not at all comparable to other countries of the BRIC nations, our healthcare system is relegated only to the cities and we have an education system which has almost nil practical utility. We are still harping and aiming at 8-9% GDP growth. How much of this growth really touches the 70 % of population which constitutes the have nots?

It leaves me all afraid. No regional identity as such and no political support existent. What do we give little ones as legacy? Where does they stand in this divide of caste, regional identity, and religion identity?

Are we paying a price being an educated, hardworking and nationalist Indian and not regional in mentality? India is not about religion, caste and region. India is about Oneness - the oneness of spirit and oneness of being together. I will hang on to the hope that things will change. We will be the change. If everyone of us starts thinking of being the change, we can bring in a revolution - a la KAIZEN (the Japanese concept of individual incremental change bringing in revolutionary change). Lets all ask for it.

How real are the reality shows on TV channels

YOUNG INNOCENT kids are under tremendous pressure nowadays. For one it is the rising educational weight in the form of school bags and pressure to get high percentage from their parents and loved ones and now there has been a flood of entertainment channels on television and kids are under pressure from their loved ones, teachers and from the members of their society where they reside to perform excellent in the talent hunt ‘reality shows’, which have been drawing a large number of audience who find daily sops boring and too complicated to understand.

The success of these reality shows, which are being telecast on different satellite channels mostly during the prime time i.e. 9pm onwards, can be gauged from the fact that these reality shows receive millions of SMS’ through mobile to vote for the favourite contestant and the reports of various surveys conducted to rate the Television Rating Point (TRP) of these programmes also prove that there has been a rising popularity among the masses, especially among the middle class families, for these reality shows.

Middle class families feel these reality shows provide an opportunity to exhibit one’s talent in singing, music, dance, comedy, laughter, etc and as the show is telecast on satellite channels, it gives one a global platform to display talent in front of a large number of viewers. Now, it is up to the viewers of the show to decide whom they like the most. The role of the judges participating in the show is nothing more than that of a puppet as they do what the channel marketing people tell them to do. The scripts are written and there seems to be little left for the judges to do anything of their own. And if the people have to decide the fate of participants, as most of the votes still get cast considering the regional preferences of the voters among the participating contestants, then what is the need of judges who rebuke and scold participants and make young participants feel like they have committed some crime by coming on to the stage.

Truth is always stranger than fiction and imagination looks brighter than reality. Reality shows in the name of talent hunt that are going on different TV channels are one such mirage, which attracts fame-hungry people to itself and then slowly finish them off in a short span of time. These channels are just exploiting young talents and making millions of rupees through the game of voting.

Immature minds cannot take failures. They start taking too much stress, thinking about the consequences of their failure and what their parents, teachers or relatives would say to them on their failure? How their friends will greet them after watching the show on TV and seeing them not qualifying for another round. All this psychological pressure takes a toll on the nervous system of a child and then some unfortunate incident occurs. What happened to young Shinjni, who is now admitted to a hospital after she suffered a light paralytic attack following the harsh judgment passed on her by the judges of a dance show.

Reality shows are not real as they look. Everything there is dramatised in front of people and a large number of viewers get fooled. The contestant whom the channel marketing people think should be the winner, gets the crown. In the past too, there have been allegations against the famous Kaun Banega Crorepati where people alleged that several members of the BSNL reached the final 10 contestants and a few were given another chance too, to win big money. So, the parents should realise that their children are not money-making machines and they must not sacrifice their childhood for such programmes. The Union government must ask all the channels to stop telecasting all reality shows, which include children under the age of 18 years. There should be some law to stop child labour that is going on in the TV industry.

A child artiste today works for more than 16 hours. Can you imagine the state of mind of that child and what problems he has to face after he becomes 40 years of age. He will be finished by then. It is time to actfor the government and there is need to spread awareness among the parents to stop putting load of your happiness and desires on the weak shoulders of your children.

National sport brings national shame ....

IT COULD’NT get worse for Indian hockey. A game that symbolize the very spirit of the Indians, a game in which India could proudly say that they had in them to be the World Champions and a game in which the magical craft of the players was envied far and wide. But now times have changed. The last time India won Gold in the Olympics was in the Moscow Olympics in 1980 and since then it has been downhill from there. India was the champions of the Olympics having won it eight times but it is a new low, which India hasn’t even managed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

Many people will have a strong view saying Cricket is to be blamed because of Cricket that Hockey has been neglected. But the reasoning here is flawed. If anyone is to be blamed, it is the Indian hockey Federation. Since KPS Gill and his men have taken over IHF, Indian hockey has gone from bad to worse. Big players have been dropped and coaches have been shuffled. Whenever India goes for a tournament it has new faces cropping up. Fifteen coaches in the past ten years and yet KPS Gill has continued to be at the top.

The symptoms had been visible in the past few years when players like Dhanraj Pillay were unceremoniously dropped from the Team, when India barely used to qualify for the finals of major tournaments. The Asia Cup win was one of the few moments that Indian Hockey celebrated in the past few years. Otherwise, it would have been a sepulchral atmosphere.

But the loss to Great Britain in the finals at Chile exposes the rot in the Indian Hockey federation. Amidst the politics, it is the national game that has suffered. As the vice president of IHF resigned, he revealed that IHF President KPS Gill and the secretary general K Jyothikumaran, don’t get in term with each other. In an effort to resuscitate the national game, Rich Charlesworth a Bradman like legend from Australia was roped in as technical director to make a difference to the Indian Hockey. But, he wasn’t even allowed to fly to Chile for the qualifiers, so was there any point in hiring such a high profile player?

It is a similar story, when the Indian hockey team returns from Chile, the coach will be sacked or he will resign, many players who might have performed well in the tournament might be dropped. The point is that the IHF has never been responsible enough to handle Indian Hockey and in their arrogance the National game go to the dogs. It is time KPS Gill instead of swapping players and coaches take the blame and resigned from the post letting people with fresh ideas come in.

Cricket too went through a similar debacle last year as the Indian team who had finished runners up n 2003 failed to go past the first round in the 2007 Cricket world Cup which was held in the West Indies. But the strength of the team was there for all to see as the players bounced back to win the 20-20 World Cup. The board, the media and the ex- players were always in support of the team even after the big loss. This is the kind of support that Indian hockey team needs. The Media is very biased to the game of hockey as it will go all out to report this loss to Great Britain but would have not done the same, had it qualified for the Olympics. Clearly, the Media has its own vested interests.

Chak De had become a National Anthem for the whole nation, but now it is more associated with Cricket than Hockey. Even Shahrukh Khan chose to buy out a Cricket team instead of investing in Hockey. Hockey needs to be encouraged right from the grass root levels else this game will die a slow death. After hitting rock bottom the only way left is going up gradually and hoping the Golden days of Hockey will be back again.
i think we need to spend money and glamorize d hockey...
as we have done with cricket
